Who is this programme for?

This course aims to expose potential school learners, students, and SMEs to the world of Computer Aided Design and Additive Manufacturing.

What will the participants be able to do on successful completion of the programme?

  • Have a grounded understanding of 2-Dimensional Design
  • Have a grounded understanding of 3-Dimensional Design
  • Prepare their designs for 3D Printing/Manufacturing
  • Will have a theoretical understanding as well as physically basic skills to operate a standard FDM (fused deposition modelling) 3D printer.

The goal is to create a conceptual framework that can serve as an entry-level to teaching students 3D design and 3D printing. Therefore, a series of modules will be introduced to potential learners/students covering topics ranging from working with the basics features to more advanced ones.

Which Learning Units will be covered?

  • Manually operating a 3D printer (loading of material, bed-levelling ens.)

How is Learning Facilitated and the programme Assessed?

  • These workshops will consist of several Modules, each tasked with helping either teach a new skill or build upon the previous. Therefore, Modules can't be skipped to progress to the next.
  • Modules consist of several small "videos" covering a specific topic, tool or feature within the software considered necessary to be able to design. Therefore, at the end of each video tutorial would be a mini quiz; however, at the end of the entire Module, the student would be expected to either create/complete or correct a design using any of the skills they learned from watching a Module.
  • In terms of assessing physical workshops to be held at CUT's Fablab, several 3D models would be designed using the Fusion 360 software; whereafter they would be evaluated on matters relating to their design and the finished printed model.

Coding Part: Phase 1

In the coding section, we will start from scratch, teaching you the fundamentals of programming using the popular C and C++ languages. You will learn about variables, data types, control structures, functions, and more. Through hands-on exercises and projects, you will gain practical experience in writing code, solving problems, and understanding the logic behind programming.

Electronics part: Phase 2

In the electronics section, we will demystify the world of circuits and electronic components. We will cover the basics of electricity, circuit theory, and electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, and LEDs. You will learn how to read and interpret circuit diagrams, and we will guide you through building simple circuits and understanding their functionality.

The highlight of this course is the integration of programming and electronics. We will teach you how to interface your code with electronic components using microcontrollers, specifically focusing on Arduino. You will learn how to connect sensors, actuators, and other peripherals to your microcontroller and write code to control and interact with them. This hands-on experience will allow you to bring your projects to life, combining the power of programming with the physical world of electronics.

Throughout the course, you will work on practical projects that reinforce your learning and showcase the synergy between coding and electronics.
